5 Steps of Extending beauty of Hydrangea cut flowers Indoors

Jul 3, 2023 | All, Tips & Tricks

Taking care of cut hydrangea (hortensia) flowers can help extend their lifespan and allow you to enjoy their beauty indoors for a longer period. With the right care, these stunning blooms can continue to brighten up your home. Here are five steps from “Fleurs de Monaco” to help you take care of cut hydrangea flowers:

  1. Prepare the Water:
Start by preparing a clean vase filled with fresh, lukewarm water. Consider adding flower food (we provide you with every bouquet) to the water to nourish the flowers and prolong their vase life. Follow the instructions on the package for the correct dosage.

  2. Cut the Stems Properly:
Using sharp and clean secateur (or scissors or floral knife), cut the hydrangea stems at a 45-degree angle. This angle increases the surface area for water absorption and allows the stems to take in more water. Cut the stems under running water to prevent air bubbles from forming in the stem, which can block water uptake.

  3. Remove Excess Foliage if there are left some.
Our florists clean the extra leaves before putting flowers into a bouquet. Remove any excess foliage from the stems that would be submerged in the water. Leaves left underwater can decay and promote bacterial growth, reducing the flowers’ lifespan. It’s best to leave a few leaves at the top of the stem for aesthetic purposes.

  4. Place in Water Immediately:
After cutting the stems, immediately place the hydrangea flowers in the prepared vase with water. The faster you can get the cut stems into water, the better, as hydrangeas are sensitive to dehydration. Ensure that at least half of the stem is submerged in the water to allow for proper hydration.

  5. Monitor and Refresh:
Monitor the water level in the vase regularly and replenish it as needed. Check for any wilting or drooping flowers and remove them promptly to prevent the spread of bacteria. Every few days, recut the stems at a slight angle and change the water, adding fresh floral preservative if desired.

By following these steps from “Fleurs de Monaco”, you can enhance the longevity of your cut hydrangea flowers and enjoy their vibrant colors and beauty for an extended period. With proper care, your hydrangeas will continue to grace your home with their elegance and charm.
